Redefining Love and Embracing Its Fullness

Updated: Feb 3

Recognizing love across multiple relationships and connections, and improving our ability to love others.

February traditionally brings an amplified focus on love, typically romantic love. There is a rich desire to find that special someone, make it work with that someone who you know isn’t quite for you, or to self-loathe about a love that was lost, never had, or non-existent between you and someone else. However, we never focus on the love that we do have during this month, or creating an atmosphere of love for ourselves and those who are near and dear to our hearts.

This affirmation is a reminder that love can be expressed in various forms through various relationships and connections. It is also important to understand that love is meant to be thought of as meaningful connections, built on longevity and not just a momentary concept due to the presence of a made-up holiday. Yes, it is nice to be pampered and shown some extra adoration during this time, but real love shows up every day.

Affirming that ‘the more love I give, the more love I receive’ was fitting for me in this season of my life because God has allowed me to see the importance of operating out of love. This one intentional act has impacted multiple avenues in my life and fostered a loving, positive, and genuine environment for me to thrive in and for those who encounter me to dwell in.

For me, operating out of love looks like kindness to strangers, helping those in need,  being intentional about being a genuine and nonjudgemental listening ear to those I love, offering support to my loved ones, and using my words wisely with forethought and consideration when offering my unsolicited and solicited advice. All of these actions are guided by the presence of love because as we know love is patient, love is kind, it is not boastful, and not full of pride. This type of intentional operating allows a greater chance of understanding, forgiveness, and healing to take place within and amongst those I’m connected to.

There is a sense of peace to be had when we shift our focus from a romantic love and begin

to see and value the presence of love that we receive from everyone around us each day. If you’re having a hard time recognizing love around you know that love is: when your parents call to check on you to see how your day is going, your aunt buys you that new item that you’ve been wanting, your friend surprises you with a lunch date, or your children drawing you a beautiful picture of scribbles. Love is an action word backed by pure and intentional motives, not just kisses, cuddles, and I love you.

Take time during February to recognize all of the love that surrounds you and be intentional about pouring out love to those connected to you and those strangers you may encounter throughout the day.

With love,
